Why this matters
Including non-canonical, redirected, blocked, or noindex URLs wastes crawl budget and harms sitemap utility.
Hypothetical standard operating procedure
Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.
- Download current sitemap XML file for review.
- For each URL, verify it returns a 200 HTTP status with no redirects.
- Check that URLs are not blocked by robots.txt rules.
- Confirm pages are not marked with noindex meta tags.
- Ensure each URL has a canonical tag pointing to itself, not another URL.
Watch for
Including URLs that return redirects, 404s, or have noindex tags confuses crawlers and impairs indexing signals.
Definition of done
Sitemap contains only canonical URLs returning 200 status, not blocked or noindexed, with self-referencing canonical tags.
