    Why this matters

Entities must explicitly opt in via Search Console to appear as sources in Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews, affecting visibility and traffic from those features.

    A STARTING-POINT EXAMPLE

    Hypothetical standard operating procedure

Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.

    1. Access Google Search Console property with verified ownership.
    2. Navigate to the generative AI features inclusion control in Search Console settings.
    3. Record the current inclusion decision, the approver's identity, and the decision date.
    4. Confirm with relevant teams that inclusion aligns with commercial, legal, and editorial policies.
    5. Document any page categories needing separate review or exclusion decisions.

    Watch for

Changing inclusion setting without proper organizational review risks unintended traffic loss or content governance violations.

    Definition of done

Search Console shows the site as allowed to appear in generative AI Search features and related impressions appear in the AI performance report.
