    Why this matters

Proper hreflang tags and fully localized metadata ensure each language version is indexed and ranked appropriately, preventing SEO damage from incorrect or missing multilingual SEO signals.

    A STARTING-POINT EXAMPLE

    Hypothetical standard operating procedure

Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.

    1. Check that all language versions reference each other and themselves using hreflang tags.
    2. Verify URL structures are consistent across languages using subdirectories, subdomains, or ccTLDs.
    3. Confirm no canonical tags point from localized pages back to source language versions.
    4. Review all metadata including title tags, meta descriptions, Open Graph tags, and structured data for local language and format.
    5. Ensure navigation, UI elements, and error messages are fully translated and not mixed with source language content.

    Watch for

Missing or misconfigured hreflang tags and untranslated meta descriptions can cause indexing issues and poor ranking for localized pages.

    Definition of done

Each language version includes reciprocal hreflang tags referencing all variants, localized title tags, meta descriptions, Open Graph tags, JSON-LD structured data, and fully translated on-page elements.
