    Why this matters

Including URLs that return errors, redirects, or have noindex tags wastes crawl budget and confuses search engines, impairing sitemap effectiveness.

    A STARTING-POINT EXAMPLE

    Hypothetical standard operating procedure

Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.

    1. Download current sitemap and extract all listed URLs.
    2. Validate each URL returns HTTP 200, is indexable, not blocked by robots.txt, and has self-referencing canonical tags.
    3. Remove URLs with 3xx redirects, 4xx/5xx errors, or noindex meta tags.
    4. Regenerate sitemap excluding invalid URLs.
    5. Submit updated sitemap index file and notify search engines via Search Console and robots.txt.

    Watch for

Listing non-canonical, robot-blocked, or noindexed URLs dilutes crawl signals and complicates indexing reports.

    Definition of done

XML sitemap contains only canonical, indexable URLs with 200 status, not blocked or redirected.
