    Why this matters

Including redirects, noindexed, blocked, or error URLs wastes crawl budget and confuses search engines.

    A STARTING-POINT EXAMPLE

    Hypothetical standard operating procedure

Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.

    1. Crawl current sitemap URLs to check HTTP status codes and canonical tags.
    2. Remove URLs returning redirects, 4xx/5xx errors, or disallowed by robots.txt.
    3. Exclude URLs with noindex meta or X-Robots-Tag headers.
    4. Validate sitemap URLs match rel=canonical destinations of pages.
    5. Resubmit cleaned sitemap and monitor for errors in Search Console.

    Watch for

Listing non-canonical or blocked pages causes indexing and crawl signal dilution.

    Definition of done

Sitemap contains only 200-status, canonical, indexable URLs consistent with site structure.
