    Why this matters

Splitting sitemaps by content type (products, blog posts, categories) simplifies maintenance and improves search engine indexing diagnostics.

    A STARTING-POINT EXAMPLE

    Hypothetical standard operating procedure

Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.

    1. Analyze site content types: products, blogs, categories, landing pages.
    2. Create individual sitemap files for each type.
    3. Build a sitemap index file referencing all segment sitemaps.
    4. Compress sitemap files (gzip) to reduce size.
    5. Submit the sitemap index file to search engines via Search Console.

    Watch for

A single massive sitemap file can be unwieldy and might exceed size or URL limits, making indexing less effective.

    Definition of done

Separate sitemap files exist for distinct content types, each referenced in a sitemap index file.
