    Why this matters

Splitting sitemaps by logical content types aids management and improves search console insights by isolating indexation issues per content category.

    A STARTING-POINT EXAMPLE

    Hypothetical standard operating procedure

Adapt this example to your site, access, tools, and change process. It is our suggested procedure, informed by the sources below.

    1. Audit current sitemap to identify content types present.
    2. Group URLs into logical segments such as blog posts, product pages, category pages, and landing pages.
    3. Create separate XML sitemap files for each content type segment.
    4. Build a sitemap index file referencing all segmented sitemap files.
    5. Compress sitemaps using gzip and submit the sitemap index in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, also reference in robots.txt.

    Watch for

Avoid one massive sitemap file which can be hard to manage and monitor; maintain size limits (50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed) per file.

    Definition of done

Distinct sitemap files exist for major content types (e.g., products, articles, categories) and are referenced by a sitemap index submitted to search engines.
